What is reliable
Firefly activity depends on species, rain, humidity, habitat, darkness and pesticide exposure. A sighting in one season does not guarantee the same place will work the next night or next year.
We therefore removed unverified promises about Popolá, Ek Balam and the old road to Temozón. These are real places, but that does not make every trail a public, authorized viewing site.
How to look responsibly
- Ask a registered local nature operator whether a guided activity currently exists.
- Confirm landowner or ejido permission.
- Arrange transport home before dark.
- Use a dim red light only when necessary.
- Do not catch insects, use flash, play loud music or leave the trail.
- Cancel during severe weather.

Safety matters more than a photograph
Rural roads may be unlit, flooded or outside mobile coverage. Never stop on a highway shoulder or enter a cenote, archaeological zone, farm or forest after closing. A guide should be able to explain access authorization, meeting point, duration and return transport.
